Thorlabs' Ø1/2" optical post holders are the ideal solution for mounting optical components when a specific height for a setup has not been determined. These post holders come in several styles: standard, vacuum compatible, and pedestal.

Standard Post Holders
Standard post holders can be mounted to any one of our Mounting Bases via a 1/4"-20 (M6) cap screw. Each includes a spring-loaded thumbscrew that holds the post in place before tightening.

Vacuum-Compatible Post Holders
Vacuum-compatible post holders are constructed from 6061-T6 and 2024-T3 aluminum and are compatible with our Vacuum-Compatible Mounting Bases. They are similar to our standard post holders but have a chemically cleaned finish instead of the standard black anodization. This allows them to be used directly out of the packaging at pressures as low as 10-6 Torr, or at even lower pressures with additional cleaning and processing. They also incorporate a one-piece thumbscrew instead of the standard spring-loaded design found on our other post holders.

Pedestal Post Holders
Pedestal post holders have a base that works in conjunction with the clamping forks featured below for flexible mounting options on an optical table. They incorporate high-strength magnets in the base to provide holding force while performing rough alignments. Standard post holders can also be converted to pedestal post holders using the BE1(/M) or BE1R(/M) base adapters, which are also available below.

Mounting Plates and Adapters

Thorlabs' PD2 Series ORIC Piezoelectric Inertia Drive Stages (U.S. Patent 11,606,045) provide fast and stable piezo-controlled linear motion in miniature packages with no backlash. The PD2(/M) stage offers open-loop operation, while the PDX2(/M) stage with an optical encoder supports open- and closed-loop operation. Both stages have a horizontal load capacity of 1 kg. The piezo inertia drive is self-locking when the stage is at rest and no power is supplied to the piezo, making these stages ideal for set-and-hold applications that require nanometer resolution and long-term alignment stability.

Load Mounting Options
The load can be secured to the stage's moving platform using 00-90 (M1.2 x 0.25) threaded holes. Alternatively, the PD2T(/M) and PD2U(/M) adapter plates (sold separately below) provide an 8-32 (M4 x 0.7) threaded hole or #8 (M4) counterbore, respectively, for the top plate of the stage. The load can also be aligned using the array of Ø1 mm, 1.5 mm deep dowel pin holes; see the drawings below for details. Ensure that the maximum insertion depth of these holes is not exceeded or else the stage may be damaged. 

Stage Mounting Options
The two #00 (M1.2) mounting counterbores are accessible when the moving plate is translated to the ends of the travel range. The recommended mounting torque is 0.03. 

The stage should be mounted on an even surface with a recommended flatness of ≤5 μm. If the stage is mounted on a surface with >5 µm flatness (as with most breadboards and optical tables), the mounting torque may need to be decreased for the velocity variation and pitch/yaw of the stage to meet specifications. The PD1B3(/M) universal ORIC adapter plate provides a mounting surface with precise flatness and 00-90 (M1.2) threads for mounting a PD2 series stage. The plate can be directly mounted to breadboards with the included 1/4"-20

Mounting / Angle Brackets

These angle adapters are essential building blocks for the construction of rigid optomechanical systems that require vertical mounting of optical components and subsystems. Various types and sizes of angle mounting brackets, including clear aperture brackets, are offered. These brackets are machined from one solid extruded shape for high strength and rigidity. Every mounting surface has been precision-machined to achieve a high degree of parallelism and perpendicularity.
